➤ How does cosyntropin cause edema and hypertension?
Cosyntropin mimics adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and prompts the adrenal cortex to produce cortisol and aldosterone. Aldosterone increases renal sodium reabsorption and water retention. The extra intravascular volume raises blood pressure and can lead to fluid accumulation in tissues. The mechanism explains the risk of hypertension and edema with this medication.
