    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

Building on the topic the student used for the first assignment (first assignment is attached), this assignment will require the student to write a one page policy brief to be sent to their legislator.

A policy brief is used to convince the target audience of the urgency of the current

problem or policy concern and present the need to adopt the preferred alternative

or course of action outlined. It is commonly produced in response to a request

directly from a decision-‐maker (legislator) or within an organization that intends to

advocate for the position detailed in the brief.

Efficient policy briefs include several common features.

    Those features include:

    • The brief is focused. All aspects discussed are focused on achieving

the intended audience to take the requested action.

    • The brief is professional and not academic. The usual audience is not

interested in research or analysis conducted to produce the evidence.

Rather they are interested in knowing the writer’s perspective on the

problem and potential solutions, based on NEW and convincing

    evidence.

    • The brief should be evidence-‐based. The policy brief serves as a

communication tool produced by someone with a vested interest in

the policy (stakeholder), therefore the target audience will only be

convinced by arguments that are supported by evidence.

    • The brief should also be concise. One page documents are the ones

most likely to be read by busy lawmakers and their legislative teams.

The format of the brief should be written as a one-‐page single spaced document.

It does not need to include a title page, running header, or abstract. However, all

references in-‐text and the reference list MUST be in APA format.

The policy brief should include the following components:

    • An interesting title to attract the attention of the reader.

    • A clear and concise statement of the problem or issue.

    • A short overview of the root causes of the problem or issue.

    • One to two recommendations with a least two rationales with

supporting evidence to validate the recommendations made.

Evidence should come from scholarly journals, not textbooks or organization web sites. Three scholarly journal articles are required

    to be used.

    • Finally, the conclusion with a summary of the action the brief is

    requesting.

You can find examples of each of these in your book. Once your policy brief has

been reviewed by the faculty member, we encourage you to send it to the person

    whom your letter is addressed.

    Components of the Policy Brief:

Title and Statement of the Problem – The policy brief has an interesting title and

the statement of the problem is clear and concise.

Root Causes – The root causes of the issue are addressed.

Recommendations – 1-‐2 recommendations for action are provided with solid

    supporting evidence.

Conclusion – Brief summary of the action the policy brief is asking for.

References – One a separate page, in APA format, list the scholarly references used.

The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker

The term “knowledge worker” was first coined by management consultant and author Peter Drucker in his book,
_The Landmarks of Tomorrow_  (1959). Drucker defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal training, to develop products and services. Does this sound familiar?

Nurses are very much knowledge workers. What has changed since Drucker’s time are the ways that knowledge can be acquired. The volume of data that can now be generated and the tools used to access this data have evolved significantly in recent years and helped healthcare professionals (among many others) to assume the role of knowledge worker in new and powerful ways.

In this Assignment, you will consider the evolving role of the nurse leader and how this evolution has led nurse leaders to assume the role of knowledge worker. You will prepare a PowerPoint presentation with an infographic (graphic that visually represents information, data, or knowledge. Infographics are intended to present information quickly and clearly.) to educate others on the role of nurse as knowledge worker.

Directions: For each of the scenarios below, answer the questions using your required
learning resources, Medscape, and clinical practice guidelines (ie AHA, ACC, ADA,
GINA). When recommending medications, write out a complete prescription for each
medication. What order would you send to a pharmacy? Include drug, dose, route,
frequency, # dispensed (days supply), refills, special instructions etc. Also state if you
would continue, discontinue or taper the patient’s current medications (if
applicable). Use at least 3 sources for each scenario and cite sources using APA
format. LIST REFERENCES AFTER EACH SCENARIO.

    Note on Assignment Attempts
Students are expected to review their work and submissions of work carefully prior to
due dates. Unless otherwise approved by the faculty, students are allowed one
submission of graded work per assignment. While the classroom allows for multiple
submissions, once an assignment is graded, submissions will no longer be accepted
unless approved by the faculty. If an assignment is submitted prior to the assignment
deadline and has not yet been graded, then students may submit a revised assignment

prior to the assignment deadline. Once the deadline has passed, resubmission is not
    permitted.
    Late Assignment Policy
Students are expected to submit assignments by the due dates noted in the course and
welcome announcement. In extenuating circumstances, such as illness, the student
must contact the instructor as soon as possible to discuss the situation. In those
circumstances, faculty will determine the appropriate course of action for the student.
Depending on the situation, these actions may include recommendations to drop the
course (if within the university drop/withdrawal period), acceptance of some or all of the
overdue assignments with or without penalties, or failure to accept assignments.
Assignments submitted late without the prior agreement of the instructor, outside of an
emergency absence, or in violation of agreements for late submission, will receive a
grade reduction for the assignment amounting up to 20%. Each day late will result in a
4% point deduction up to day 5. After 5 days, the assignment will be graded a zero.
However ALL assignments, quizzes, and exams must be completed to pass the
    course.

    Wishing you much success,

    Dr. Ridley

    Dr. Ridley

not clinically useful? Discuss how first-pass metabolism affects nitroglycerin’s
bioavailability and define both terms. Identify the route of administration with 100%
bioavailability and explain how alternative routes overcome the first pass effect. Include
    a sample prescription for nitroglycerin.

    SCENARIO 3
Where are the majority of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes located? Using the
Drugs.com pill identifier, enter the following characteristics to identify the medication
AND strength. What CYP enzyme metabolizes this medication? How can this
information be applied to medication therapy management? Write a sample prescription
for the identified medication and strength.
