In this scenario, Darla takes notice that several of Mike’s assigned clients are seeking counseling with her and making comments that suggest a possible experience of unethical behavior. While this situation definitely raises concerns, Darla should avoid making assumptions and follow the appropriate ethical procedures to address this issue. The ACA Code of Ethics provides guidance for situations involving potential ethical violations by colleagues. Standard I.2.a clearly states: “When counselors have reason to believe that another counselor is violating or has violated an ethical standard and substantial harm has not occurred, they attempt first to resolve the issue informally with the other counselor if feasible, provided such action does not violate confidentiality rights that may be involved” (American Counseling Association [ACA], 2014, Standard I.2.a). If and when appropriate, Darla could attempt to discuss this situation with Mike to clarify what may be happening. However, in this situation, because they are both practicum students working under direct supervision, it may be more appropriate for Darla to consult their shared supervisor and share her personal observations without disclosing unnecessary client details. The ACA Code of Ethics also addresses situations when concerns are not resolved informally. Standard I.2.b states: “If an apparent violation has substantially harmed or is likely to substantially harm a person or organization and is not appropriate for an informal resolution or is not resolved properly, counselors take further action appropriate to the situation” (ACA, 2014, Standard I.2.b). If Darla informs the supervisor and no action is taken, she may need to consult her faculty supervisor or training program for other guidance. Ignoring the (potential) unethical conduct could also place clients at risk and in-turn create a legal liability for the agency. Taking appropriate steps ensures that client welfare and professional standards remain the sole priority.

    Observing Behavior

![](https://www.sweetstudy.com/questions/assigment-apa-seven-all-instructions-attached-20964433)Gaining experience in observation is essential for you to develop the skills necessary to making good, reliable, and valid observations in order to record behavior correctly. Without such data, you are less likely to have the ability to develop effective intervention plans nor track their effectiveness.

For this Assignment, you will conduct a 5-minute behavioral observation in a public setting. This Assignment may very well be the first time you have ever conducted a systematic behavioral observation. As you complete this Assignment, think of aspects of the behavior that may be important, even if you are not recording that information.

    Resources

Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity.
Click the weekly resources link to access the resources.

    [**WEEKLY RESOURCES**](https://waldenu.instructure.com/courses/216544/modules/items/8979145)

    To Prepare

    · Review the meaning of “frequency measurement,” as addressed by your Learning Resources this week, including the video
_Observational Systems._ **Note**: It is critical for you to review all media programs for this week before completing this Assignment.

    · Review the Learning Resources video
_Observing Problem Behaviors,_ which shows a child exhibiting a target behavior. Apply observational systems to the behavior by doing the following:

    · Restate the target behavior as defined in last week’s Assignment.

    · Conduct a simple frequency measurement. That is, count the number of times you observed the target behavior occurring on the video.

    · Select a public venue to conduct a brief 5-minute behavioral observation (e.g., grocery store, coffee shop, park, mall, etc.). Apply observational systems to the behavior by doing the following:

    · Identify a target behavior (e.g., number of times sipping on a drink) as defined in last week’s Assignment.

    · Select a subject or subjects.

    · Conduct a simple frequency measurement for each subject (if there is more than one, do this concurrently). That is, count the number of times you observed the target behavior being performed by each subject.

    **Assignment**(1 page)

    · Write a description of your experiences conducting your simple frequency measurement of the behavior you selected from the public venue (e.g., ease of assignment, difficulties encountered, etc.).

    · Include your simple frequency measurement chart or table in your paper.

_Be sure to support your Assignment with specific references to behavior-analytic theory and research. In addition to the Learning Resources, search the Walden Library and/or the internet for peer-reviewed articles to support your Assignment. Use proper APA format and citations, including those in the Learning Resources._

    Parsimony

![](https://www.sweetstudy.com/questions/assigment-apa-seven-all-instructions-attached-20964429)For this week’s Discussion, you examined a common set of assumptions characterizing the behavior of behavior analysts. One of those assumptions is the Law of Parsimony. The history and etymology of the word parsimony is from the Latin
**pars-**, meaning “to act sparingly, be thrifty (with), refrain from” (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). By extension, the Law of Parsimony posits that given two explanations for a given phenomenon, you should choose the simplest scientific explanation that fits the evidence.

Ultimately, an important purpose for using parsimonious interpretations is to enable a principle of economy when determining where new findings might incorporate into the existing knowledge base of a given field. By way of illustration, consider the following review regarding negative symptoms in schizophrenia. In the review, the authors identify a lengthy list of nearly 20 negative schizophrenia symptoms ranging from different forms of affect issues to poor grooming to asociality. Applying the law of parsimony (referred to as Occam’s Razor in the review) the authors simplified their evidence by stating, “…we propose that while negative symptoms are varied and broad in both their clinical presentation and longitudinal course, they can all be subsumed under the concept of avolition. As the primary construct, avolition translates to decreased functional performance, a hallmark of schizophrenia's longer-term outcome but identifiable in its earliest stages” (Foussias, & Remington, 2010). Note: In ABA, parsimony refers to ruling out simpler, behavior-analytic explanations (e.g., reinforcement, environmental variables) before assuming complex internal causes — not simply simplifying the way we communicate about behavior.

For this Assignment, you will consider why parsimony is an important construct a behavior analyst might use when communicating interventions to a parent or teacher.
