➤ When is a ventilator indicated for a patient?
Mechanical ventilation is indicated when a patient cannot maintain adequate oxygenation or ventilation independently. Common reasons include respiratory failure from pneumonia or ARDS, severe COPD exacerbation, respiratory depression from overdose, inability to protect the airway, high carbon dioxide levels, and during general anesthesia for surgery. Clinical assessment guides the decision.
