➤ Why does jaundice occur in hemolytic anemia?
Jaundice arises because accelerated red blood cell breakdown releases excess hemoglobin that becomes unconjugated bilirubin. The liver cannot conjugate all of it, so indirect bilirubin rises and deposits in skin and sclera. Chronic hemolysis also increases risk of pigment gallstones from excess bilirubin production.
