➤ Why is assigning spending to program categories difficult, especially for shared costs?
Shared costs—administration, facilities, IT, and libraries—span multiple programs and resist neat assignment. Units dispute allocation bases like FTE, credit hours, or square footage. Expect data gaps and political pushback. Use cost pools, clear allocation formulas, activity-based costing pilots, and regular recalibration to improve fairness and accuracy.

As the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO), you are responsible for steering the organization’s innovation strategy to ensure it remains competitive, relevant, and forward-thinking. This strategy involves identifying, developing, and implementing innovative ideas, products, services, processes, or business models that create value and align with the company’s strategic objectives. A key milestone during your first 90 days is to identify a new opportunity. Your task is to craft a concept brief introducing a new product or service designed to drive business growth and capture emerging opportunities. A concept brief provides a clear and concise document that introduces the key elements of a project, idea, or initiative to ensure alignment among stakeholders. It serves as a communication tool that helps decision makers and stakeholders understand the scope, objectives, and vision of the idea, enabling informed decision making and collaboration. Your proposed product or service must stand out as unique within the industry, be difficult to replicate, and align closely with consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP). The perceived value of the product or service primarily drives a consumer’s WTP. The consumers will not be inclined to pay for it if they do not understand or recognize the value or if the offering fails to address their specific pain points. Therefore, the proposed idea must clearly demonstrate its value and effectively solve the problems that matter most to consumers.

The legacy HR system used by the organization operates sing an outdated computer programming language. Recently, the chief information officer told the HR director that the legacy IR system is out of date and should be replaced by more modern technology. Therefore, the HR director decides to buy an HR rodule from an enterprise resource planning (ERP) vendor. Through discussions with the vendor, the HR director learns that the IR module is undergoing a reengineering process that is not yet complete, and as such the organization would be the first new ustomer. The HR director also learns that the new system would require hardware changes to run the new software, but the endor promises to customize it for the organization. Ultimately, the HR director is concerned about the implementation costs juoted by the ERP vendor. As a result, the HR director does not accept the ERP’s implementation cost proposal and engages a lifferent, small-business IT provider with lower rates to handle the implementation. The HR director also decides to use HR mployees in the director’s office that have an aptitude for technology to provide project management support. Unfortunately, when the new HR system launches, it has multiple problems, including a high error rate, lost data, inefficient screen navigation, and a poorly designed user interface.
Which action should the HR manager take to determine the system’s efficiency?
Measure the number of screens that are required to enter each major type of transaction.
Survey the HR employees about the amount of time required to enter a transaction in the new system compared to the legacy system.
Measure the amount of time required by the system to enter the major types of transactions.
Ask the implementation vendor to determine the amount of time required to enter major transactions.

3 Here are two examples of how operations try to reduce the negative effects of having to cope withhigh levels of variety. Research each of them (there is plenty of information on the web) and answerthe following questions:(a) What are the common features of these two examples?(b) What other examples of standardisation in transport operations can you think of?
Example 1 – The Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Association (search under dabbawallas) operatesa service to transport home-cooked food from workers’ homes to office locations in downtownMumbai. Workers from residential districts must ride commuter trains to work. They can be conservativediners, who may also be constrained by cultural taboos on food handling. Their workers, knownas dabbawallas, pick up the food in the morning in a regulation tin ‘tiffin’ box, deposit it at the officeat lunchtime, and return it to the home in the afternoon. The dabbawallas take advantage of publictransport to carry the tins, usually using otherwise underutilised capacity on commuter trains in themid-morning and afternoon. Different colours and markings are used to indicate to the (sometimesilliterate) dabbawallas the process route for each tin.
Example 2 – Ports have had to handle an infinite variety of ships and cargoes with widely differentcontents, sizes and weights, and protect them from weather and pilferage, while in transit or in storage. Then the transportation industries, in conjunction with the International Organization for Standardization(ISO), developed a standard shipping container design. Almost overnight the problems of security andweather protection were solved. Anyone wanting to ship goods in volume only had to seal them intoa container and they could be signed over to the shipping company. Ports could standardise handlingequipment and dispense with warehouses (containers could be stacked in the rain if required).

Please correct the wrong answers that are with red X’s, the excel files are included in each image. 1.) One of the products of the G. A. Tanner Company is a special kind of toy that provides an estimated unit profit of $3. Because of a large demand for this toy, management would like to increase its production rate from the current level of 1,000 per day. However, a limited supply of two subassemblies (A and B) from vendors makes this difficult. Each toy requires two subassemblies of type A, but the vendor providing these subassemblies would only be able to increase its supply rate from the current 2,000 per day to a maximum of 3,000 per day. Each toy requires only one subassembly of type B, but the vendor providing these subassemblies would be unable to increase its supply rate above the current level of 1,000 per day. Because no other vendors currently are available to provide these subassemblies, management is considering initiating a new production process internally that would simultaneously produce an equal number of subassemblies of the two types to supplement the supply from the two vendors. It is estimated that the company’s cost for producing one subassembly of each type would be $2.50 more than the cost of purchasing these subassemblies from the two vendors.2.) David, LaDeana, and Lydia are the sole partners and workers in a company that produces fine clocks. David and LaDeana are each available to work a maximum of 40 hours per week at the company, while Lydia is available to work a maximum of 20 hours per week. The company makes two different types of clocks: a grandfather clock and a wall clock. To make a clock, David (a mechanical engineer) assembles the inside mechanical parts of the clock while LaDeana (a woodworker) produces the hand-carved wood casings. Lydia is responsible for taking orders and shipping the clocks. The amount of time required for each of these tasks is shown next.

Case Study: Southwestern University Traffic Problems
Southwestern University is experiencing increased congestion in its football program now that a high‑profile coach has been hired. This influx means additional reserves, but it has also increased complaints due to the traffic problems associated with the football games. Marty Sour, SWU’s president, has asked the university to plan based on traffic projections. Dr. Sour would hope to have sufficient capacity so that 35.000 cars per hour could travel from the stadium to the intersection following the in‑service highway. To alleviate congestion and increase capacity, the city is considering various improvements. The numbers of cars (in 1,000s) per hour for the relevant links are shown in Figure 11.34.
Because the major problem will be after the game, possible measures include where streets close to the stadium being transformed into one‑way streets for a short period after each game with police officers directing traffic. Figure 11.34 indicates that the final number of cars per hour that may leave the stadium (node 1) is 30,000. The numbers of cars that may pass through nodes 2, 3, and 4 (or links 5, 6, and 7) are given as appropriate capacities in the figure. Therefore, Dr. Lee has prepared alternative expansions while routing traffic by the cheapest options. Based on past experience, it is assumed that as long as the net outflow capacity is within 2.500 cars per hour of the number that leave the stadium, the problem is not too severe. However, the severity of the problem proves dramatic for an additional 1,000 cars that are enabled to leave the streets.
Figure 11.34 — Roads from Stadium to in‑service
    Discussion Questions
If there is no expansion, what is the maximum number of cars that may actually arrive from the stadium to the intersection?
If the cost for expanding a short section were the same for each section, how many expansions would be needed to obtain a total capacity equal to 35.080 per hour?

For this discussion you will investigate the competition of one of the products listed below and present your analysis of how your product compares to the competition. Please answer the questions below.Select one of the products from the list below. Which product did you choose? Why did you select that product?Which competitive product are you going to investigate? Look in the marketplace and select one company that offers a competitive product. You can likely find this out from a quick Google or Amazon search on your product. For example, if your product was Coca Cola you could pick Pepsi.
Continue your investigation to determine the following facts about both products (tying it back to the 4Ps topic): What is the price for each product? How would you describe both products with respect to each other? Where (how) can you buy each product? What incentives or sales approach does each use? (Provide specific examples/evidence – for instance, where did you find the price? This is an easy way to bring in outside evidence.)Overall, looking from the perspective of the eventual buyer, how would you compare the two products? Which would be more attractive to you and why?Do the two product serve a similar ideal customer (target market) of do they serve a different group? What are you thoughts about the value of competitive research? Please cut/paste these specific steps into your discussion post and answer within each numbered item. Midwest Health System is a healthcare organisation operating multiple hospitals and clinics across the Midwest region. The organisation relies heavily on information systems for patient care, administrative functions, and data management. Their IT infrastructure includes electronic health records (EHR), patient management systems, and networked devices. The organisation faces challenges in maintaining system security, data privacy, and operational continuity while complying with healthcare regulations like HIPAA. Under CIO Steve Nelson’s leadership, they’re working to modernise their IT infrastructure. At the same time, managing associated risks in a highly regulated healthcare environment where patient data security and system reliability are critical to their core mission of providing quality healthcare services.CIO Steve Nelson was seeing increased problems with billing mistakes, data fraud, waste, and greater compliance demands. Such worries were especially acute in billing and collection, which influenced the paying ability of the organization and the contentment of the patient. In order to tackle the issues, Nelson met with the information systems and audit teams to evaluate and improve existing controls to mitigate risks and comply with laws such as HIPAA and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The objective was to empower operational efficiency, security of the organizational asset sensitive data, uphold candor, and not compromise financial recap.
