For this discussion you will investigate the competition of one of the products listed below and present your analysis of how your product compares to the competition. Please answer the questions below.
1.Select one of the products from the list below. Which product did you choose?
2.Why did you select that product?
3.Which competitive product are you going to investigate? Look in the marketplace and select one company that offers a competitive product. You can likely find this out from a quick Google or Amazon search on your product. For example, if your product was Coca Cola you could pick Pepsi.
4.Continue your investigation to determine the following facts about both products (tying it back to the 4Ps topic): What is the price for each product? How would you describe both products with respect to each other? Where (how) can you buy each product? What incentives or sales approach does each use? (Provide specific examples/evidence – for instance, where did you find the price? This is an easy way to bring in outside evidence.)
5.Overall, looking from the perspective of the eventual buyer, how would you compare the two products? Which would be more attractive to you and why?
6.Do the two product serve a similar ideal customer (target market) of do they serve a different group?
7.What are you thoughts about the value of competitive research? Please cut/paste these specific steps into your discussion post and answer within each numbered item. This offers consistency in how we can all interpret your responses along with the others from class.

Summarize the case and give your thoughts on MANAGING HR IN ‘OFFSHORING COUNTRIES’
The concept of offshoring and its strategic importance ‘Offshoring’ is an increasingly common term used to describe the outsourcing of business activities. Contemporary offshoring, also known as service offshoring, reflects the emergence of a global economy based on service and knowledge and epitomized by the concept of the call center. What has been of interest in advanced economies has been the increasing amount of high skilled work being offshored, which has created political, economic, employment and industrial relations tension in the home country. From an employment perspective, offshoring has been used to outsource work to contractors in countries where unionization is less developed and as such reduces the potential for disputes disrupting the production process. As such, industrial relations are transferred to a third party overseas, thereby side-stepping industrial agreement in higher wages/costs in the home countries and legal protection (as the Rana Plaza case above highlights). These countries often have very low wage rates as a further incentive to offshore. 88 Whereas the uptake of service offshoring has been rapid, the uptake occurred starting from a relatively low-base. Even given global economic irregularities, offshoring continues to be an important trend for reaching competitive advantage in the globalized economy. & In this section we will give special emphasis to the context of host countries, which are typical recipients for offshoring activities of MNEs. For these offshoring countries we will discuss HRM implications because this trend leads to a revolution in the global division of labor. New interfaces emerge that need to be managed.

  • Which of the following statements about striving to reduce labor costs per pair produced at each of…

➤ Why isn’t maintaining 3,500–4,000 pairs per worker always enough to guarantee competitive labor costs?
Hitting a productivity range helps but does not guarantee competitiveness. Regional wages, benefit burdens, defect rates, product complexity, and plant-scale economics alter effective unit costs. Firms must align productivity with compensation design, quality control, and overhead management to ensure labor cost per pair is truly competitive.

➤ How should a supervisor handle a direct report’s workers’ compensation claim and potential conflict of interest?
Follow company policy: immediately notify HR and the insurer, document the employee’s report, and avoid influencing medical care or claims handling. Refer to the following scenario for the next 3 questions.
A midsized manufacturing company sells products directly to consumers, hires employees primarily from its local area, and aggressively opposes all employee efforts to organize or to form a union. Shortly after a new HR manager joins the company, an employee claiming to speak on behalf of other employees demands that the new HR manager change employees working conditions and threatens to organize if employees’ requests are unmet. The HR manager shares this interaction during a meeting with the HR director. The HR director informs the HR manager of the companys current struggles with productivity and its inability to manage or settle any labor disputes. The HR director also advises the HR manager that although employees have made similar threats in the past, those efforts to organize did not take place. The HR director provides the HR manager with data describing the financial performance deficit the company is experiencing and advises the HR manager to quietly manage employees’ complaints. After the meeting, a reporter in the local news media contacts the HR manager regarding communication with an employee of the company concerning poor working conditions.
The HR manager researches the employee’s complaint about poor working conditions and discovers that the company has a high rate of back and wrist injuries. Which action should the HR manager take to address this issue?
    Answers
Offer training to expand management and employee ability to identify back and wrist injuries.
Reward employees for recording back and wrist injuries in a medical log.
Implement a system for reporting conditions that may lead to back or wrist injuries.
Encourage employees to take breaks and stretch to reduce back problems related to repetition.
