Work Absenteeism: Can Wellness Implementation Decrease It?

Topic: How workplace wellness programs sponsored by employers can reduce absenteeism rates

among employees working in mid-sized healthcare facilities.

Sample: Full-time nurses that work in mid-sized, private hospitals in Texas at least one year.

Independent Variable: The engagement in a formal employer-sponsored wellness program or

    the lack of such engagement.

Dependent Variable: Number of registered sick leave days consumed within a six months

    duration.

Hypothesis: Full-time nurses in the mid-sized Texas private hospitals with an

employer-sponsored wellness program that is structured will have fewer days of sick leave

compared to full-time nurses in the same hospitals who do not have a wellness program in six

    months.

Research Question: Do full-time nurses, in mid-sized, privately owned Texas hospitals, who

attend a structured employer-sponsored wellness program have fewer sick leave days in the six

months than do similar nurses who do not attend a structured wellness program?

Disciplines Incorporated: Business Administration; Public Health.

Justification: Business administration will provide knowledge on the organizational strategy,

human resource management and cost-efficiency issues that relate to wellness program

implementation. The concept of the public health offers guidelines on the prevention of diseases,

health promotion, and the reduction of risky behaviors among employees. With the fusion of

these fields, organizational performance outcomes and health outcomes of employees can be

assessed. Both areas would be needed to examine absenteeism as a quantifiable business

    3

indicator with the intervention based on evidence-based health promotion interventions. This

multi-disciplinary strategy will make sure that the workplace wellness programs are evaluated as

financial investments, as well as the structured health interventions with the meaningful

implications at the level of organizations and population.

    INDS 491

    **Literature Review Assignment Instructions**

    **Overview**

The literature review assignment gives you the chance to research your topic and research question so that you can understand the scholarly context around your topic as well as the research gap that your question might help to fill.

    **Instructions**

In 1,000-1,500 words and using at least seven scholarly sources, create a literature review of the scholarship and research gap around the topic of your research proposal.

    Requirements:

    1. A literature review accomplishes two main things: it summarizes the context of other scholar’s work related to your topic, and it identifies the research gap that you propose to fill.

    2. You must include an introduction paragraph with a literature review purpose statement, body paragraphs that each center around a sub-topic related to your research proposal, and a conclusion paragraph that summarizes your literature review and emphasizes the presence of the research gap you have identified.

    3. You must use third person

    4. Your grammar, spelling, and punctuation should be flawless. Visit the Liberty University Writing Center if you want extra help. Current APA formatting is required, but do not include a title page or abstract.

    Additional Suggestions:

    1. The research gap is the lack of knowledge surrounding the research question you have chosen. You should mention this in the conclusion but can also mention it in your purpose statement and in your body paragraphs.

    2. A literature review purpose statement is just like a thesis statement in some ways. It belongs at the end of your introduction paragraph, and it gives the focus of the lit review, but in a lit review, you are not arguing to make a point. You are summarizing relevant research and identifying your research gap, so your purpose statement should reflect that. Here is an example of what one may sound like: While much research has been done on (broader topic), a research gap remains surrounding (your specific question).

    3. If you cannot find a source that is a perfect fit for your topic, that is a good thing! It means your research question is original and has not already been studied. Find sources that are mostly or at least partially related, but if you find a source that is a perfect fit, that is a red flag.

    4. To choose topics for your literature review body paragraphs, break your research question down into key sub-topics. For example: if you are studying whether listening to classical music makes kindergarteners run faster, you might pick the following sub-topics: influence of music on exercise intensity, studies on running training for young children, classical music effects on kindergarteners, etc. In each case, you can look up relevant studies, report those results and why they are relevant, and then identify where the research gap remains.

    5. A key aspect of a literature review is synthesis! There may be times where it makes sense to discuss just one source in a paragraph, but generally your paragraphs should be focused on a sub-topic and pull from multiple sources to illustrate where the scholarly literature is in studying that sub-topic.

    6. When you summarize sources, use lots of citations! Citation density is a powerful way to show that you are not just giving a shallow or basic overview of a topic.

    7. Remember that your hypothetical readers are scholars who already know the basics. Get detailed with your sources and avoid explaining basic things that scholars in the field would already know.

    8. Do not argue for a point or show bias! It will be VERY tempting to argue for your point, but you should not argue in your literature review, only observe. Remember that the whole point of a research proposal (which your literature review is part of) is just to propose that a question be asked, not to argue that you know the answer. If you already know the answer, why even bother proposing asking it?

    9. Identify the most up-to-date research on your topic. Find the newest sources you can!

    10. Do not use your introduction to introduce your topic; instead, introduce the idea of the research on it. When you finish your
**Research Proposal Assignment**, you will have to write an overall introduction paragraph, and that one will introduce the topic itself. So, for now, introduce the literature review specifically. Introduce the idea of reviewing scholarship and the sub-topics you will be studying, include your statement of purpose, and keep it short!

    11. Refer to the textbook and journal articles for information on and examples of literature reviews. Reading other professional literature reviews is the best way to get better at writing yours.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

**Title of Paper Gets Repeated Here Exactly as It Appears on the Title Page**

This is where the body of your paper begins after the Abstract (to be created in Week 7). The introductory section will be written later (also in Week 7 after the entire project is completed) and will end with a solid thesis statement for the entire proposal.

    ## **Literature Review**

This section should have its own introductory paragraph that provides an overview of the
_literature_. The literature review section should be 1,000 to 1,200 words; it will include at least seven academic sources, remain objective (no 1st- or 2nd-person pronouns), and synthesize the information that you have uncovered about your topic without bias. This section will mostly read like the work of a reporter sharing observations of what others are doing, what they are thinking, and what they have uncovered through their own research. Now that you have “joined the conversation” regarding your topic, you are creating the framework to help others see how your later contribution will help to fill in the gaps from other literature. A good suggestion from the instructions is to
**focus the literature review around 3-5 key concepts**, devoting 1-2 paragraphs to each and pulling information from various sources. Since multiple authors will be discussing the same concepts but in different ways, this section will require synthesis of their ideas.
**Do not merely report** seven paragraphs about various sources
**.** You may choose to use level 2 headings to separate your concepts. If so, an example heading appears below. This literature review section should begin with an introduction that puts your topic within the context it belongs. These introductory paragraph(s) for this section should have a formal thesis that keeps the information centered on the literature, like this example:
**Scholarship has much to say about the [aspect] and [aspect] of this [topic], but there is still much to be studied in relation to [gap(s)].**

    **Heading Level 2 if Necessary**

Although not required, some students find that using Level 2 Headings are helpful in this section. The best papers use topics for such headings and synthesize information from the various authors who discuss those topics. Following this method encourages organization of ideas instead of a boring list of sources, so information from one source may be used in various sub-sections if it applies to multiple topics. Note the heading is flush left, bolded, and capitalized using title case with no punctuation. This level 2 heading is probably the deepest you will go for the papers in our class, but APA does have specific rules regarding headings at additional levels based on the seventh edition of the APA style manual.

**Heading Level 2 (Never have just ONE Level 2 Heading)**

If you do decide to use the Level 2 headings for the Literature Review, you will have more than one. Keep breaking down the discussion of your topic into its various components.

    **Conclusion**

    ## This paragraph will conclude ONLY the Lit Review. Even if the paper does not utilize Level 2 headings, it should still have a concluding paragraph to wrap up the discussion of source material and what other researchers have to say about the various components of your topic.

    Additional Suggestions:

    1. The research gap is the lack of knowledge surrounding the research question you have chosen. You should mention this in the conclusion but can also mention it in your purpose statement and in your body paragraphs.

Find sources that are mostly or at least partially related, but if you find a source that is a perfect fit, that is a red flag.

Work Absenteeism: Can Wellness Implementation Decrease It?

    Tanesha Blythe

    Liberty University

    INDS491: Interdisciplinary Studies Capstone (C03)

    Professor Stephen Milacci

    March 2, 2026

    Discipline: Health & Business Administration

    2

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    Scenario

Fielder Medical Center (FMC) is a federally funded healthcare facility that seeks to expand its business into the local sale of medical equipment. As FMC sought to improve its data management in alignment with digitization goals, it implemented a system to manage the licensing, certificates, and relevant professional documents for the doctors working at FMC. Doctors are required to log in and upload sensitive artifacts that prove they are current in their licensing to practice. These artifacts may contain personally identifiable information about the doctor, including real name, home address, social security number, and other sensitive data.

Aside from the digitization of data for convenient management within FMC, the main purpose of this system is to allow access by the government for the purpose of validating information and securing federal funds on a recurring annual basis.

Concerns about security were discussed at a recent board meeting, and an external security consulting firm was hired to conduct a security assessment of FMC’s systems. This report identifies several potential compliance issues that would require the system security plan (SSP) to be updated, including security controls that are in place or planned for meeting system requirements.

As FMC’s CISO (Chief Information Security Officer), you are responsible for identifying and developing a cyber strategy to address the risks identified in the attached “Security Assessment Report for Fielder Medical Center” to ensure that FMC’s security posture is brought into alignment with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) requirements. As the new FMC system includes only doctor information and does not include patient information, compliance focuses on FISMA requirements instead of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Rule requirements.

    A.  Summarize the gaps that currently exist in the company’s security framework as described in the attached “Security Assessment Report for Fielder Medical Center” (SAR).

    B.  For _each_ of the **five** identified controls in Section 3.3 of the SAR, do the following:

    1.  Identify the associated risk rating as low, moderate, or high and explain the risk.

    2.  Justify FMC’s decision to remediate the risk associated with the identified control instead of accepting the risk based on compliance and industry guidelines and support the justification with industry-respected sources.

_Note: Be sure to include all_ _**five**_ _controls in part B1, and all_ _**five**_ _controls in part B2. Your submission will be returned if_ _**one or more**_ _controls are missing from part B1 or part B2._

    C.  Discuss how FMC should remediate the risks with _each_ of the **five** controls identified in Section 3.3 of the SAR. For _each_ risk, include any assets, actions, or changes that will be needed for remediation.

_Note: Be sure to include all_ _**five**_ _controls from part B. Your submission will be returned if_ _**one or more**_ _controls are missing from part C._

    D.  Develop a PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) –compliant policy to address the **three** concerns identified in Section 3.2.4 of the SAR, including the roles and responsibilities associated for _each_ requirement identified within the SAR to meet PCI DSS compliance.

    **Overview**

Employers should have methods of assessing the effectiveness of any training program as well as the overall performance of their employees. Assessments provide beneficial information that can be used to make necessary revisions to training programs or curricula. They also provide information used to help make important decisions for employee growth.

    **Instructions**

In this assignment, you will create a presentation in which you propose strategies for assessing a training program's effectiveness. This includes information about both the assessment methods and the data collection methods. As a reminder, assessment methods are used to determine how well learners retain knowledge and are able to master objectives based on content. Data collection methods are used to collect feedback on the effectiveness of training.

You are to create a 10 slide presentation in which you:

    STEP 1:

    · Identify two assessment methods you can use to gauge learner mastery of content.

    · List the components, challenges, and benefits of each assessment method.

    · Align each assessment method to one of your objectives to show how the results demonstrate learner mastery.

    STEP 2:

    · Compare data collection methods you can use to evaluate your training program.

    · Analyze the components, challenges, and benefits of each data collection method.

    · Identify at least five key questions when assessing the effectiveness of the training program.

    · Analyze two data collection methods (tools) you could use to evaluate your training program. Some examples of data collection methods include interviews, surveys, observations, and focus groups.

    STEP 3:

    · Write a two-slide summary in which you choose one of the two assessment methods above, one data collection method, and explain how trainees will be evaluated.

    · Summarize your rationale for choosing your assessment method including the challenges and benefits.

    · Summarize your rationale for the data collection tool you selected including the ease of implementation of the tool.

    · Summarize how you will evaluate training for trainees.

Be sure to support your rationale with scholarly research by using three sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:
