    Ethics Case Studies

    Applied Behavior Analysis
    Situation 1
Jamie is a BCBA. For the past year, she has been working with children with autism, ages 5–8
years, in their homes. She enjoys her work, but it is tiring to travel from home to home. She was
recently offered a job as a BCBA for a local nursing home, providing behavioral support to
senior citizens with dementia. What are the ethical concerns with Jamie accepting this position?

    Situation 2
Sam is a BCBA providing parent training to families of children with autism. One of the parents
showed Sam a brochure for a new kind of therapy involving dance, horses, and sensory
integration. She wants to implement this therapy with her child. What are Sam’s ethical
    responsibilities?

    Situation 3
Adam’s brother is interested in becoming a BCBA. He has completed his coursework but is
having a hard time finding a supervisor. What are the ethical implications if Adam supervises his
    brother for fieldwork hours?

    570 DISCUSSION-

    ## **Where Am I?**

Self-awareness is a necessary component in your decision-making process. Without self-awareness, you will be plagued with proverbial blind spots that will inevitably end in client harm. To raise your self-awareness, your discussion assignment this week is aimed at taking what you have learned and turning inward to answer the question, “Where am I?” This is not asking where you are geographically but rather where you are personally and developmentally.

Include the following in your post:

    · Take a moment to reflect on your own life and decision-making. Considering what you have learned about utilitarianism, deontology, and principlism, discuss what types of decisions you tend to make. Do you tend to try to do the most good for the most people? Do you tend to focus on the intention behind the action? Do you find yourself seeking out a structured “right,” or do you tend to think that “right” is relative?

    · Consider the Four Component Model. How would you rank yourself in terms of Moral Sensitivity, Moral Judgment, Moral Motivation, and Moral Character? Do you find yourself struggling to see “what the issue is?” Do you find it easy to give advice and find yourself explaining to friends, “You know what you should do?” Do you tend to take time to weigh all options, or do you make decisions swiftly? Is it challenging for you to “do the right thing” when it is not the popular thing, or do you tend to think of yourself as boldly standing “in the gap?”

    · In your reflection, try to determine which schema (pg. 27-28 of your text) you seem to operate from in your decision-making. Whether personal interest, maintaining norms, or post-conventional, each of us tends to generally operate from a schema.

    · End your post with a thoughtful question related to the topic for your peers.

For this discussion, simply answering each of the prompts will not suffice. You need to take the time necessary to reflect on your life and spend time understanding what has contributed to wherever you may be. Each of us has a unique set of experiences that contribute to how we view and interact with the world around us. It is only after we know ourselves that we can understand what we have to offer our clients. Discuss what may contribute to what you have discovered in answering the questions above.

Important note: While this is a reflection assignment, you are not required to share things that you wish not to share with the class. We want the best for you and your future clients. If you find yourself struggling with this assignment, reach out to your instructor for support.

    **Discussion Assignment Instructions**
    **Discussion in Module 1, 2, & 6**

For each Discussion, you will post one thread of
**at least** **350 and less than 500 words** by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of the assigned Module: Week. You must then post
    **2** replies of
**at least 250 – 350 words** by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the assigned Module: Week. For each thread/post, you must support your assertions with
**course materials, at least 1 scholarly source, and 1 biblical citation** in current APA format. Each reply must incorporate
**course materials and at least 1 biblical citation** in current APA format. Any scholarly sources cited must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable sources include the textbook, course presentations, the
_NASW Code of Ethics_, the Bible, other textbooks, and professional journals. Remember providing more depth, critical analysis, and/or application of research than required demonstrates advanced competency and in turn, may give the student an opportunity to earn more points in the advanced category of the rubric.

    1. It is best to avoid using direct quotations from the textbook or any other source (except a short Scripture verse) in any of your threads or replies. These submissions must be in your own words (paraphrased) so that you clearly demonstrate your mastery of the material.

    2. For the post, do not attach a Microsoft Word document; rather, type directly into the textbox or copy and paste from a Microsoft Word document directly into the textbox.

    3. Incorporate your ideas and unique perspectives. Be careful to not simply repeat information you find in the textbook. After you write your post, compare what you have written to the assignment instructions and discussion prompts to ensure that you have addressed all the requirements. Remember to support your replies with
**course materials and 1 biblical perspective**, showing a critical analysis of the topic.

    4.
**End each thread/post with a thoughtful question** related to the discussion topic for your peers to address in their replies.

    5. When writing your written replies to classmates, be conversational and stay on topic. Remember to
**address your peers by name**, encourage and challenge your peers’ perspectives, and answer the question(s) posed by your peers. Remember to support your replies with
**course materials and a biblical perspective**, showing a critical analysis of the topic.

    6. If a Bible verse is included, ensure that it is relevant and applicable. Do not simply include a verse at the end of your thread or replies, expound on how the verse is relevant to the topic.

    7. Remember to cite
**all** your sources within the body of your thread/post, at the end of your thread/post, and along with your uploaded video. These sources include, but are not limited to the textbook, the
_NASW Code of Ethics_, the Bible, and scholarly sources.

    8. Finally, proofread your work carefully to catch APA, spelling, capitalization, grammar, and sentence structure errors. Refer to the grading rubric to ensure an outstanding grade.

    Post 1

When learning how to play the piano at the age of 6, I learned from books how to read music. Learning how to play by ear was a different skill from reading music. Having that ear to separate the instruments through song takes a lot of training. With apps separating the instruments, it helps train my ear.

Technology affects the way I learn information by making sure that I'm not wasting resources, my time, and overall increasing the speed of learning. I am not a big technology user, but I can say that not having to talk to anyone is great. Checking if something is open without calling the place of business, AI chatbots for websites to help with simple troubleshooting, with simple and recurring problems, is usually what helps me because I am not good with technology.

My current access to information provides me with opportunities that I wouldn’t have without today’s technology through education. With my current work schedule not being stable and changing shifts, I don’t have a lot of time to do physical school.

    Post 2

    Hello everyone,

Technology has honestly become a big part of how I learn and stay informed every day. I use my phone for almost everything from watching YouTube videos to understand topics better, to using Google when I need quick answers. I also use social media like Facebook and TikTok, not just for entertainment, but to learn new things. For example, I’ve come across videos about health, budgeting, and even motivation that have helped me think differently and make better decisions. I’ve also taken online college classes, which is something I probably wouldn’t have been able to do as easily without technology, especially during COVID.

Technology has definitely changed how I look for information. Instead of going to a library or waiting to ask someone, I can find answers instantly. It makes learning faster and more convenient, but at the same time, I’ve learned that not everything online is reliable, so I try to be more careful about what I believe.

Having access to so much information now gives me opportunities I wouldn’t have had before. I’ve been able to go back to school, learn at my own pace, and explore topics that actually interest me. Technology has opened doors for me that make learning feel more possible, even with everything else going on in my life.
