    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

As a teacher, it is important to understand the components of explicit and systematic phonics instruction. Intentional phonics instruction is complementary to phonological awareness and can have positive effects on word recognition, fluency, spelling, and vocabulary achievement. Teachers explicitly teach the relationships between letters/graphemes and the sounds of spoken language. Explicit instruction requires that teachers provide step-by-step directions for the relationships between letters (patterns) and sounds. The goal in phonics instruction should always be to teach students to decode patterns to move words into sight word memory.

Teachers are encouraged to develop intentional and robust instructional routines to support all students. The research shows that the brain responds to phonics instruction that is engaging, multisensory, and cumulative. While there is not one specific phonics scope and sequence, most research-based phonics instruction follows an organized structure that involves less complex letter-sound relationships to more complex ones.

Utilize the “Phonics Instruction” template to complete this assignment.

**Part 1: Explicit Instruction and Intentional Instructional Routines**

Choose a grade level K-3 for this assignment and review the standards from Tennessee. After reviewing the grade level reading foundational standards, choose one and create a 10-15 minute explicit introductory phonics lesson.

    **Part 2: Reflection**

After reviewing the grade level foundational standards and creating an explicit phonics lesson, write a 150 word reflection on how the Science of Reading was used to address the components of the phonics lesson.

Support your assignment with a minimum of two scholarly resources.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

I am an african american female adult learner, I own three child care centers have been a owner and operator for the last 13 years.  You  will be conducting an interview of someone from another culture in a  few weeks. The reading this week should help you prepare for this  up-coming project as you consider elements within intercultural  rhetoric.

First, find a conversation you are going to  analyze. It needs to be a conversation between two people from  different cultures. You can go onto YouTube, you can choose two  classmates, or you can select two people from the grocery store. I don’t  care who you choose, but they have to clearly be from two different  cultures and there needs to be a rhetorical element to it. In other  words, they can’t be saying hi and that is it. Maybe the rhetorical  element is to buy something, to sit somewhere, to explain something,  etc.  You are going to listen to their conversation, then make an  analysis.

My hope is that you will learn from this  exercise that culture can potentially have an impact on the way people  will communicate rhetorically (persuasively).

Second, as they are talking, take down  notes that you can later apply to the seven “useful guides”.  You will want to consider the following:

    1. What is their history – how well do they appear to know each other?
    2. Can you see any cultural style in the way they communicate?
    3. Any obvious preconceptions towards the other’s culture?
    4. Can you see any evident expectations in their conversation?
    5. Does their culture have an impact on the way they try to convince?
    6. Can you see any cultural aspects in the way they communicate?
    7. Is anything besides words being used to persuade?

Third, write up your findings in your analysis while incorporating the following terms:

Hegemony, epistemology, efficacy, paradigm,  skewed, and rhetoric. These six words need to be used correctly and  made bold in your analysis to earn full points in this section.

Here is the template you must use to submit your third analysis. Please remove the directions in [ ]

    Q1 (dee)

For this week's research proposal exercise, you will describe, in detail, how you plan to collect your data. For example, will you utilize an experimental approach, a survey research approach, a qualitative field research approach, or an unobtrusive research approach? Describe why your chosen approach is most appropriate. Here, you should complete the specific proposal exercise in the Babbie text that is most conducive to your selected approach (i.e., “Proposing Social Research: Experiments” [p. 248]; “Proposing Social Research: Survey Research” [p. 288]; “Proposing Social Research: Qualitative Field Research” [p. 324]; or “Proposing Social Research: Unobtrusive Measures” [p. 354]). Again, I am not asking you to physically collect the data for this class. Instead, I would like to see you delineate a strategy for data collection

    Q2 (meka)

    1. How relevant are unions in America today?

    2. What are your thoughts on unions?

    3. What are the ramifications for the HRM function regarding unions in the workplace today?

    Q3 (quita)

Suppose you are conducting a collaborative grant application for the project you outlined in weeks 2 and 3. Explain how you would develop a needs assessment and collaborative capacity for the project. Note any shortcomings or obstacles you foresee in the collaborative process.

    Q4(jay)

What do you feel are the top 3 challenges that a military family may face and why?  Research an 2 appropriate coping skills for each challenge.  Be sure that your response is grounded in fact and not opinion.

    Q5 (jay)

This week, we are examining gender and the media.  Compare the ways in which men and women are portrayed in the media.  Have those images changed over time?  What do the media tell women and men about gender roles as well as how their bodies should look?  Does this differ by culture? Are there double standards for men and women in the media?  Provide specific examples.

    Q6 (quay)

This week we will expand upon the introductions from last week and look at ourselves, our talents, strengths, and personalities and consider the ways we can use those to succeed in whatever path we take in the future.

First, take some time to work through this _free_ personality test, which is based on the Myers-Briggs personality types. [https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test](https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test)  It will take you 10-15 minutes to work through it.

Then, once you have an idea of your personality type based on the results, take some time to read through the description of your type with an open mind: [https://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/mbti-basics/the-16-mbti-types.htm](https://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/mbti-basics/the-16-mbti-types.htm) Remember that the results are simply an indicator of your preferences – they do not dictate any sort of pathway or indicate that anything is right or wrong. Read more about preferences here: [https://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/the-mbti-preferences/](https://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/the-mbti-preferences/)

Then, take a look at one or both of the below resources that have some charts and suggestions for career pathways that may match up to the preferences of those with your personality “type”.

    Indeed.com:  [https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/finding-a-job/jobs-for-myers-briggs-personality-type](https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/finding-a-job/jobs-for-myers-briggs-personality-type)

    Career Assessment Site: [https://careerassessmentsite.com/tests/myers-briggs-tests/about-the-myers-briggs-type-indicator/the-16-myers-briggs-personality-types/](https://careerassessmentsite.com/tests/myers-briggs-tests/about-the-myers-briggs-type-indicator/the-16-myers-briggs-personality-types/)

For your discussion post, reflect on your results and experience with the test, your results, your reactions to reading through the materials this week, and how the results align with your career goals. Were you surprised by anything? Does your personality type “match” your desired career? Feel free to use other sites that focus on careers and personality types – and share what you have learned.

This assignment addresses course learning objective 1 – Identify the various segments of the hospitality industry, along with institutional learning objectives related to information literacy.

For this assignment, you will be preparing an annotated bibliography that lists four different academic sources from the Trefry online library. The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to help you start researching for your final project early on, to help you get comfortable in the Trefry Library, and to help you learn how to evaluate sources for your academic projects.

To begin, please visit this resource from our online Trefry Library:
    [https://www.apus.edu/apus-library/resources/writing/writing-at-apus/graduate-writing/the-annotated-bibliography/](https://www.apus.edu/apus-library/resources/writing/writing-at-apus/graduate-writing/the-annotated-bibliography/)

This source explains the purpose of an annotated bibliography and the way to go about writing an annotation.

Feel free to download and use the APA Annotated Bibliography Template from this page as the basis for your submission. It’s an easy to make sure you are formatting it correctly.

You will be using the Trefry Library to search and identify four different valid academic resources. You should find resources that will provide a definition of four different hospitality industry segments: Foodservice/Restaurant, Lodging/Hotel, Travel/Tourism, and Event Planning. Be sure to utilize the tips and strategies for evaluating your sources that were covered in your lessons. As a review, you can revisit this
(https://myclassroom.apus.edu/shared/elf/HOSP100/lesson1/Section_11.html) (posted in the lesson content) or if necessary, revisit the
    (https://www.thinglink.com/videocard/1410725156048863233) or the
    [APUS Writing Center](https://www.apus.edu/apus-library/resources/writing/writing-at-apus/writing-at-apus/)

For each of the industry segments identified, find a valid, academic, scholarly resource that provides a solid definition of the industry segment. This may be a book, a peer-reviewed trade journal article, or a scholarly article. Remember to apply the principles of RADAR for evaluating your sources along with the tips found in the “Identifying Your Resources” page you reviewed from the library.
    [https://www.apus.edu/apus-library/resources/writing/writing-at-apus/the-research-process/](https://www.apus.edu/apus-library/resources/writing/writing-at-apus/the-research-process/)

Once you have identified one source for each of the four segments, it is time to put together your annotated bibliography.

    1. Begin by listing the source in the correct APA, 7th Edition format. You may need to review the APA Style Guide in the library.

    2. Follow the formatted source with a definition of the industry segment based on the information synthesized from the resource itself. Remember to write the definition in your own words, do not simply copy and paste a line from the book or article.

    3. Finally, include an
**_evaluative annotation_** for each resource. This should give a reason why this particular source is a valid and accurate quality source. The focus of the annotation should be on the
_description and evaluation_ of the source. It is NOT a summary of the resource. You will need to explain why your source is valuable to a student of hospitality and to the final project – and use criteria to evaluate the sources, including objectivity, currency, accuracy, reliability, and relevance – and also be able to identify any issues of concern with that particular source. It's absolutely fine to conclude the source would not be a valuable source for a hospitality student because it is (outdated, does not have references, is biased, etc.).

To summarize – you will have four entries for your annotated bibliography – one for each of the four industry segments identified above. Each entry will have a citation, a definition of the industry segment based on the information in the source, and a 100 – 200 word annotation evaluating the source.

Submit your annotated bibliography as an attachment. Please reach out with any questions prior to submitting your assignment. You may post a public question in the Q&A discussion thread or send an email privately to your instructor.

Refer to the grading rubric for specific requirements and details on how your submission will be graded.

**AI Guidance:** Please note that Generative AI tools like Chatbot, ChatGPT, or Copilot, etc. should NOT be utilized for this assignment.

If you choose to utilize a tool such as grammarly to help you revise your grammar after the bibliography is complete, be sure to keep your rough draft submitted to the tool as well as what that tool generated. This may be asked for to validate originality if a question about AI usage arises.

Writing an annotated bibliography is a skill you should develop without the use of generative AI.
